Growing up, I dreamed of having a radio station in my closet.  Dream achieved.
Friendly. Enthusiastic. Intimate. Wildebeest.

Here's an assortment of my work through the years:  imaging, promos, commercials ... samples of my on-air appearances at nearly every station ... and some aural ephemera.

He started as one of many character voices in a promotional campaign for Busch Gardens ... and then South Florida decided The Wildebeest was the summer's breakout star.

Henny Youngman on four hooves. Each morning for a month, The Busch Gardens Wildebeest clomped into the studio with Susan Wise and Greg Budell to tease the Song of the Day. Channeling a rather hairy Harvey Fierstein, I had a ball writing and voicing these -- even if it did blow out my vocal cords.

101.5 LITE FM • Miami, Fla. • Money Monkey Promos • May 2002

We were challenged to make Listener Appreciation Day ever more outrageous. Somebody had given us a box full of stuffed monkeys with Velcro-clasp hands -- and next thing you know, we were introducing ... the LITE FM Money Monkey. In one day, our simian sidekick gave away $50,000 (and a year's supply of bananas) to Listeners all over South Florida. ('No, Ham. The blue lever.')

101.5 LITE FM • Miami, Fla. • Let It Snow! Promos • 2001-02

One thing it doesn't do in South Florida -- is snow. Except for one morning each December, when LITE FM would dump 10 or 15 tons of real snow on one lucky Listener's lawn. For a family dealing with tragedy, illness or a parent deployed overseas, it was just the touch of the holiday spirit they needed.
Rob Sidney · Alouette Cheese • Mime & Cheese • Dec 2001
Alouette Cheese • Mime & Cheese • Dec. 2001

A LITE FM Christmas tradition was the 36-hour 'Holiday Festival of Music' -- continuous carols and songs of the season, with a single sponsor airing a low-key commercial message once an hour. In 2001, Alouette Cheese was our partner ... but provided no scripts. It set a perfect stage for one of the world's most understated entertainers.

A LITE FM Christmas tradition was the 36-hour 'Holiday Festival of Music' -- continuous carols and songs of the season, with a single sponsor airing a low-key commercial message once an hour. In 2001, Alouette Cheese was our partner ... but didn't provide very much in the way of creative guidance. So we took the cow by the horns.

101.5 LITE FM • Miami, Fla. • 30 Years In 30 Hours Open • Dec. 31 1999

Laboring under the spectre of the Y2K meltdown, we produced a 30-hour retrospective of 101.5 LITE FM's 30 years as WLYF. This was the piece that kicked it all off at 8 p.m. on New Year's Eve. I pushed the button, sat back and hoped we'd all be around the next morning.

LITE FM's Kickoff to the Holidays: It was a South Florida tradition -- all Christmas music, all Thanksgiving weekend. It was also my excuse to avoid the Black Friday crowds, hang the studio decorations and play the Carpenters.

101.5 LITE FM • Miami, Fla. • Friday LITE Fever • Summer 2007

I always felt I was born about ten years too late. This is the style of radio I just missed; a composite of our short-lived 'Friday LITE Fever' retro show. Obvious nods to my buds Ken Cocker, Kris Earl Phillips and J.J. Marshall (and tribute to two masters I never met: Jim 'Captain Whammo' Channell and Big Ron O'Brien).

101.5 LITE FM • Miami, Fla. • 1999

The metamorphosis of WLYF continues. By this point, the station had gotten brighter and a bit more foreground in morning drive. Here's me (in for Susan Wise), news anchor Lisa Lupari and traffic anchor Richard Lewis.
Rob Sidney · WMXJ Majic 102.7 • Miami-Fort Lauderdale, Fla. • Weekend Aircheck • 1997
Majic 102.7 • Miami, Fla. • 1997

Every so often the PD of the co-owned oldies station would need a weekend shift filled, so I'd strap on the headphones and fire up the Four Tops. As a goof, I slipped this aircheck into that year's AIR Awards submissions ... and it wound up as a finalist. (Fortunately a legitimate Majic 102.7 personality, Joe Johnson, scored the trophy!)
Rob Sidney · HOT 106 • Lancaster-York, PA • 1997
HOT 106 • Lancaster-York, Pa. • 1997

This station doesn't exist. It was a demo created from voicetracks I did for Scott Studios in Dallas. They needed a hot AC presentation for their automation system at the fall NAB Radio Show; I decided to assemble it into an 'aircheck'.
Rob Sidney · WLYF Lite 101.5 • Miami-Fort Lauderdale, Fla. • Morning Aircheck • 1995
LITE 101.5 • Miami, Fla. • 1995

As PD, I didn't do a whole lot of fill-in. Here's a sample of WLYF going through its glacial evolution -- at this stage, as 'LITE 101.5'. In a rare mellow moment, I'm subbing for morning host Michael Taylor.

105.9 WAXY FM • Miami, Fla. • Morning News • Mar. 9, 1990

'Imagine teaching your dog to fetch a stick, and having him come back instead with a bag of human body parts.' That pretty much sums up my writing style as News Director and morning news anchor from 1988-90.

105.9 WAXY FM • Miami, Fla. • Music for Lovers • Mar. 1990

Some of WAXY's biggest shares came from the night show -- featuring love song requests and dedications. Here I'm filling in for regular host Mark Denver, less than six days before the station's sale to Ackerley.
Rob Sidney · 105.9 WAXY FM • Miami-Fort Lauderdale, Fla. • Overnight Aircheck • Sep 1988
105.9 WAXY FM • Miami, Fla. • Sept. 1988

Even the overnight shift offered a producer/board-op and permitted considerable latitude to demonstrate personality. News anchor Nic Rogers and I approached it as 'afternoon drive' in the middle of the night.

US99 • Chicago, Ill. • Sept. 1986

Working the 'Third-Shifter Show' finally allowed me to break free of the rigid liner-card formatics I'd been brought up on. It was a pretty cushy gig; if need be, I could stroll in about 1:30 in the morning and be out the door by 5:31. I had a blast!
Rob Sidney · WXLO • Evanston, Ill. • Overnight Aircheck • May 1986
640 WXLO • Evanston, Ill. • May 1986

When I went back to Northwestern in 1986, I discovered that the Communications Residential College's little carrier-current AM station was alive and well. I rejoined the staff and set out to serve as a model of contemporary hit radio for the students of CRC. (Mostly they made fun of me.) Talk about 'narrowcasting'!

WLPL • 98YCR • 92 STAR • Y107 • WASH • Composite • 1980-85

I've been fortunate to have worked for PD's who were either desperate or deaf. How else can you explain putting this kid on the radio? (Gotta love that 'Baltimore O', hon.)

From weekends at WLPL, WYCR and WYST ... to overnights at WYEN, I've spent my career being tossed in the deep end. But I kept treading water and slowly started to improve. Then somebody thought it would be a good idea to have me sub in morning drive in D.C. The entire airstaff must have had the flu that week.
Rob Sidney · WNUR • Evanston, Ill. • Flashback Weekend & Morning Aircheck • 1982
WNUR • Evanston, Ill. • Spring 1982

The music was that weird 'new wave' stuff I had no desire to program -- so I moved quickly through the operations and technical hierarchy instead. Every so often, they let me drive the bus. Here's a sample of WNUR's annual retro 'Flashback Weekend' as well as a few breaks from a more mellow morning show.

WSID • Baltimore, Md. • Afternoon News • Aug. 30, 1979

If you've scrolled down this far, you deserve to hear the worst. All of 16 years old, this is from my first day on the air at Baltimore's thousand-watt daytime soul oldies station. (They actually asked me back for a second day.)

101.5 LITE FM • Miami, Fla. • Station Composite • 2009

Every so often, I'd be invited to discuss joining another station somewhere other than South Florida -- and that would require assembling a sampler of the entire day's sound.  Here's what LITE FM sounded like in '09, from sunup to midnight.

101.5 LITE FM • Miami, Fla. • Susan Bennett Imaging Sampler • 2009

17 years before she was outed as the voice of Siri, vocal artist Susan Bennett was part of the signature sound of LITE FM. Here's just some of the wonderful work we did together during our partnership -- which lasted more than two decades.

101.5 LITE FM • Miami, Fla. • New Antenna Dedication • Oct. 2009

After 40 years, WLYF was getting a new tower.  Sadly, veteran engineer John Morris, who'd overseen the project, passed away a month before its completion. As we prepared to transfer the transmitter to the new antenna, LITE FM marked the occasion with this announcement.  (Fittingly -- and in memory of his dad -- John Morris, Jr. was there to throw the switch.)
Rob Sidney · Jefferson-Pilot Radio • Greensboro, N.C. • A Century Of Excellence • Summer 2003
Jefferson-Pilot Radio • Greensboro, N.C. • A Century Of Excellence • Summer 2003

In celebration of Jefferson-Pilot's 'Century of Excellence', I was asked to capsulize the history of JP Radio -- beginning with the purchase of the foundering WBIG, Greensboro. Now that Jefferson-Pilot is but a memory, let this piece stand as tribute to Southern broadcasting's 'grande dame'.
Rob Sidney · WDTL-FM • Cleveland, Miss. • Station Composite • 1993
WDTL-FM • Cleveland, Miss. • Station Composite • 1993

Marketing Delta Country to agencies and national advertisers was a challenge. So we put together a station composite to reflect WDTL's programming and production values. This was a rather slick-sounding radio station for the middle of the Mississippi Delta!
